Tear Trough Fillers
(Undereye Fillers)
A tear trough is a deep crease between the lower eyelid and upper cheek. As we age, we lose volume in this area, causing under-eye dark circles, hollows, and eye bags to appear.

The goal of a tear trough filler is to reduce the depth of a tear trough. It’s a nonsurgical method of facial rejuvenation.

What is a Tear Trough Filler?

A tear trough filler is an injectable treatment that’s used under the eyes. Its purpose is to add volume beneath the eyelids. 1

The product most often used in this area is one typically made of hyaluronic acid, although other ingredients may be used. Hyaluronic acid is a gel-like substance that naturally exists in our bodies. When injected into the skin, hyaluronic acid increases fullness and decreases indentations.

            Are Tear Trough Fillers Safe?

Yes, tear trough fillers are relatively safe. Treatments should be carried out by a highly-skilled practitioner/ doctor.

Before your Tear Trough Treatment Procedure

            • Avoid dental procedures 2 weeks before and after the procedure.

            • Before your treatment, avoid taking blood thinners like aspirin and other anti-inflammatories like Ibuprofen and a high dose of vitamin E for 7-10 days before the treatment. 2

            What's the procedure like?

The treatment only takes around 30 minutes.  It involves numbing the tear trough area with a topical anesthetic and then injecting the area with hyaluronic acid gel, which works to boost collagen production and replace the lost volume brought about through the aging process. It also hydrates, softens, and rejuvenates the skin, creating a more youthful appearance.

            Aftercare and Recovery time

You’ll likely have some swelling, bruising, and redness. These side effects usually improve after 48 to 72 hours.

Be sure to follow post-treatment instructions, which typically include the following:

            • Avoid intense activity for 24 to 48 hours.
            • Apply ice during the first 48 hours.
            • Avoid sleeping face down.
            • Use your fingers to gently massage any lumpy areas.
            • Avoid using make-up or other skincare products for at least the first four hours following the treatment.

When will you see the results?

Dermal fillers produce natural-looking, instant results. While the effect is noticeable immediately, it can take 1 to 2 weeks to see the full results.

How long do undereye fillers last?

While results are typically long-lasting, it’s also important to remember that tear trough fillers are temporary since the filler will gradually break down over time. On average, it lasts up to 1 to 2 years. Patients are advised to come back to the clinic for repeat fillers to retain their youthful, fresh appearance.

How much does it cost for the treatment?

Different clinics offer different pricing, but generally, prepare to shell out P20,000 to P25,000 for the whole procedure.

            Takeaway

Not everyone is a good candidate for getting eye fillers. The best candidate is a patient who has hollow or darkening under the eyes. They have good skin thickness and elasticity that will allow for a natural augmentation under the eye.  If a patient has bags that significantly fluctuate with factors such as sleep, alcohol, or salt intake they may not be a candidate for under-eye filler.
